Honestly, Your Eminence, if you guys would spend as much time preaching the love of Jesus Christ as you do on this stuff, the Chrch in America would be much better off!

    Great letter from Cardinal George!

I am deeply troubled by reports that you have invited President Obama to the Al Smith dinner. Can you please comment on this situation? If true, what motivated you to do this? To avoid scandalizing Catholics on a worldwide level, please undo this grave harm and scandal and uninvite him!

Kudos to Cardinal George. I am not too old to remember when a certain European country forbid its citizens from patronizing stores owned by those of the Jewish faith. These current attempts to ban stores because the owner was a Baptist who was not afraid to endorse the biblical definitipon of marriage are not terribly different. We are on a slippery slope and these new bias attempts demonstrate that.

We here in America respect the principle of freedom both as a universal wish which
underlies human dignity, essential to the vital expression of conscience,
and as a concept which we like to identify as being a hallmark of our own nation in

So references to freedom and especially to freedom of conscience are sure to be made both by those who oppose and by those who favor single-gender marriage, birth control,
legal abortion, various possible roles and functions of government and, of course, any number of other issues and ideas in our world.

In all this whirl and tussle of ideas, there are those which represent the beliefs
and teachings of the Catholic Church, dearly held. And the Church must always stand up
for them, which means, in no small measure, to be ready Numto explain them clearly, precisely, eloquently and compellingly to the world at large.

Certainly, just as the Church is compelled by its conscience, others who do not share some
of the Church’s beliefs may be deeply compelled by their own consciences as well; that is life. Political democracies were designed with the intent of
allowing differing viewpoints to be considered in civil and
    orderly ways.

Thanks to Cardinal Dolan for inviting both President Obama and Mitt Romney to the
    Al Smith dinner.

What you say makes sense but does it apply to President Obama making the same kinds of decisions for the people of the U. S.
and if it implies that the govt cannot make those kinds of decisions for us then why would he be invited to New York for the Catholic Charities Al Smith Fundraiser, this must be a contradiction to what you have just implied in this article. Respectfully yours and concerned,

Why did the Cardinal invite the president to the Smith event? If the Cardinal believes we are in a fight for our religous freedom, and we are…, then he should NOT give the president a phot-op with Catholic leadership.

    GOD Bless

I’m confused. If Cardinal Dolan is suing the Obama Administration because that Administration has basically ordered Catholics to commit mortal sin under Obamacare mandates, why in God’s name would he invite Obama to the Al Smith dinner?

I think it is a good think it is a very good thing that the President of the United States and the Republican candidate are coming to dinner. Catholic Charities can use the support.

Perhaps the Cardinal could do as Pope Benedict when he hosted Nancy Pelosi at the Vatican and forbid any photo ops at the dinner. That would seem to be what both candidates want to come to the dinner for-photo ops! Simply disappoint them and don’t have any!
