Puerto Rico Update (English and En Español)

Even two weeks after Hurricane Maria hit, the images and stories of the devastation in Puerto Rico continue to move our entire nation. We here in New York feel a special closeness to the people of Puerto Rico, as so many of us have friends, families, and loved ones with ties to that beautiful island.  Boriqueños make up a cherished part of the Catholic family of the archdiocese.

I do have a bit of good news.  After nearly two weeks of trying, I was finally able to reach Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez, the Archbishop of San Juan, and can report that he is doing well.  So many people here in New York know and love Archbishop Roberto, as he served in this archdiocese for many years, and continues to be a beloved and well respected friend of us all.  I assured the archbishop of the love and prayers of this archdiocese, and he asked me to please express to you his deep gratitude.  The archbishop was also grateful to learn of our efforts to provide material assistance to the people of Puerto Rico.

I owe you an update on those efforts as well.

Although I like second collections about as much as you do, for three weeks in a row the people of the Archdiocese of New York responded with typical generosity, first for Texas, then for Florida, and finally for Puerto Rico.  Thanks to you, we will be able to offer more than $400,000 in direct relief for the people of Puerto Rico.

The priests of this archdiocese, particularly those with friends or family members in Puerto Rico, or those serving large Puerto Rican communities, have been asked to get us information about how the archdiocese can help.  We are also preparing for any influx of people from Puerto Rico who may come to New York, so that the Church might be ready to warmly welcome them, and meet any immediate needs that they might have.  Our parishes, schools, and Catholic Charities, are all gearing up to be of assistance.

It is my hope to try and visit Puerto Rico sometime in the next few days, to personally express our love and concern, and bring some material assistance too.  I will stay in touch with Archbishop Gonzalez to monitor situation there, and schedule a visit at a time when it would not hamper relief efforts that are underway.

Please know of my own sincere and deep gratitude for the goodness and care you have already shown, and will continue to show, for our brothers and sisters of Puerto Rico.  I’ll keep you posted.

Incluso dos semanas después del impacto del Huracán María, las imágenes e historias de la devastación en Puerto Rico continúan moviendo a toda nuestra nación.   Aquí en Nueva York sentimos una cercanía especial con la gente de Puerto Rico, ya que muchos de nosotros tenemos amigos, familias, y seres queridos con vínculos con esa hermosa isla. Los Borinqueños constituyen una parte apreciada de la familia Católica de la archidiócesis.

Tengo un poco de buenas noticias.   Después de casi dos semanas de intentarlo, finalmente pude comunicarme con Arzobispo Roberto González, Arzobispo de San Juan, y puedo informar que está bien.   Mucha gente aquí en Nueva York conoce y ama al Arzobispo Roberto, ya que sirvió en esta archidiócesis durante muchos años, y sigue siendo amado y respetado amigo de todos nosotros.   Aseguré al arzobispo el amor y las oraciones de esta archidiócesis, y me pidió que le expresara su profunda gratitud.   El arzobispo también se mostró agradecido por conocer nuestros esfuerzos para brindar asistencia material al pueblo de Puerto Rico.

Le debo una actualización sobre esos esfuerzos también.

Aunque me gustan las segundas colectas tanto como ustedes,  por tres semanas seguidas la gente de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York respondió con generosidad típica, primero para Texas, luego para Florida y finalmente para Puerto Rico.  Gracias a ustedes, podremos ofrecer más de $400,000 en ayuda directa para la gente de Puerto Rico.

Se ha pedido a los sacerdotes de esta archidiócesis, particularmente a aquellos con amigos o familiares en Puerto Rico, o aquellos que sirven a grandes comunidades puertorriqueñas, que nos obtengan información sobre cómo la arquidiócesis puede ayudar.  También nos estamos preparando para cualquier afluencia de gente de Puerto Rico que pueda venir a Nueva York, para que la Iglesia esté lista para darles la bienvenida y satisfacer las necesidades inmediatas que puedan tener.   Nuestras parroquias, escuelas, y organizaciones, y Caridades Católicas  están preparadas para asistir.

Es mi esperanza intentar y visitar Puerto Rico en algún momento en los próximos días, para expresar personalmente nuestro amor y preocupación, y traer una cierta ayuda material también. Me mantendré en contacto con el Arzobispo González para evaluar la situación allí y programar una visita en un momento en que no obstaculizaría los esfuerzos de ayuda que están en marcha.
