The following homily was delivered at this morning’s 10:15  am Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral: Homily for the Fourth Sunday of Advent 12.21.14 God’s Holy Word, which we just heard, and the sermon that follows, are supposed to be good news.

December 15, 2014 You need a couple boosts to get you into the “Christmas spirit”? Try these two: Saturday was “Santacon,” which, I’m told, means a lot of young adults dressing like Santa Claus and doing a “pub crawl” through Manhattan.

The Wall Street Journal has an excellent “Houses of Worship” column by Rabbi Sacks called “ A New Movement Against Religious Persecution .”   Here is an excerpt: “According to the Religious Freedom in the World Report 2014 by the Catholic Church’s Aid to the Church in Need organization, freedom of religion has deteriorated in almost half the countries of the world, and sectarian violence is at a six-year high.

Yesterday I was happy to be with the folks at San Vincente de Paul Nursing Home in the Bronx to bless their permanent home, after being displaced by Hurricane Sandy. It was a joy to be with them and celebrate Mass.

God’s time is not our time but God always has a plan. It is often in retrospect, looking back in time, that we see God working in our lives.
