As anyone growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s can tell you, it was hard not to notice and be impressed by the Reverend Billy Graham. There was no question that the Dolans were a Catholic family, firm in our faith, but in our household there was always respect and admiration for Billy Graham and the work he was doing to bring people to God.

This past Saturday, February 17, I had the honor of offering the funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Bronx for Private First Class Emmanuel Mensah, a recent immigrant from Ghana, an American citizen, in the National Guard hoping to train eventually as a Marine.

They’re calling it a “conflict” for Catholics, leaving many wondering what to do. I’m referring to the fact that Ash Wednesday and St. Valentine’s Day both occur on the same time this year, and that’s this Wednesday.
