Last Wednesday, during United Nations Week, I had the honor of hosting the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos.
President Santos had asked to come visit, to seek our prayers and solidarity for and with his brave people, who would this Sunday vote to ratify the long-awaited peace treaty between the government and FARC, the rebel group which has engaged in attacks for nearly four decades.
I was inspired by his efforts and conviction, especially his trust in God, his own Catholic faith, and his acknowledgement of the role that Pope Francis and the Church have in this initiative.
The president mentioned how this conflict has been the longest, and only remaining, “war” in Latin America, and that he felt impelled to work for its end. Hardly was he naive about the threats and dangers, yet, he remained confident. He knew there was a dare here, and that thoughtful people were critical.
After the meeting, I sent a letter to all of our heavily Latino parishes, advising them of the request of President Santos for support and prayer, and inviting our beloved parishioners of Colombian background to let their family members know of our unity.
Now I ask you all to pray for peace in Colombia!
